CHRISTIAN ETHICS AND ETIQUETTE

Christian Ethics focuses on Christian actions and principles derived from Christian faith, by which to act. It is at the point of a multitude of decisions about what to do or what not to do, how to do right and how to avoid doing what a Christian ought not do.

Christian ethics can be defined as a systematic study of the way of life exemplified and taught by Jesus, applied to the manifold problems and decisions of human existence. We as Christians must be obedient to God's will, to do things in His house in an orderly way. Let all things be done decently and in order (1Cor. 14:40).

The following is a list of rules that apply to church ethics and etiquette:

  1. Common Sense-The rules of grace are generally based on a liberal dose of common sense, remember to treat others as you would be treated. Think before you speak or act.

  2. Do not enter the sanctuary when scripture is being read or during prayer hour.

  3. Do not cross in front of the pulpit while service is in progress. Always get assistance from the ushers.

  4. Do not leave the sanctuary until after the benediction. The benediction is the final blessing hour. It is important that you remain for your blessing.

  5. Do not remove Bible's, hymnals or tithing envelopes from the church. Also, do not remove choir robes which have been purchased by the church.

  6. Do not place paper, gum or other items of debris on the floor or pews.

  7. Eating is absolutely forbidden in all areas, unless designated as food service areas.

  8. Do not write notes and messages on church envelopes. Also, do not mar or disfigure Bibles or hymnals.

  9. 9. Do not walk down center aisle in the sanctuary during worship; unless designated by the ushers.

  10. 10. Do not drop or throw your offering in the offering plate or onto offering table; reverently give your offerings.

  11. Do not walk unnecessarily when persons are up speaking.

  12. Do not abuse the church furniture by marking on, sitting on, etc.

  13. Do not walk or move during the call to discipleship. It is a distraction to the person or persons who may be trying to make a decision to come to Christ.

  14. Do not read church bulletins or other materials during worship service until such time is designated, i.e., responsive reading, announcements, etc.

  15. All worshipers should bow their heads when prayer is being given.

  16. Please be courteous and move down the pews so that other persons may share the pew with you. (Please obey ushers).

  17. All worshipers should be on time for all services. Latecomers-distract from the reverence of the service. Do not show-up to show-out.

  18. Respect the rights of others. Do not speak out during a speakers message.

  19. Always be recognized by the presiding officer before you speak during a meeting.

  20. The church grounds, as well as the sanctuary, are sacred. Please do not use profanity, use loud, lewd music, smoke or drink while on the premises.

  21. Utilize Christian courtesy when parking on church property.

  22. Do not make unnecessary, long personal phone calls on the church phone, and never make long distance calls unless instructed to do so.

  23. Do not walk or enter the sanctuary when an anthem is being sung by the choir.

  24. Always respect the ushers guidance. Be cooperative and fill in the front when requested.

  25. Be courteous to fellow worshipers. If children become restless, take them out of service quietly and discreetly.

  26. Only authorized persons should be allowed to play instruments of the church (i.e organ, piano, etc.). These have been specially tuned and are delicate.

  27. Church uniforms (i.e., robes, ushers and nurse uniforms, etc.) should only be worn for church and church related services.

  28. Sound systems should only be operated by authorized personnel.

  29. Always consult and respect your pastor's instructions in proper salutation procedures (opening acknowledgments).

  30. Respect the pastor's rules and regulations concerning pulpit decorum
